Main Research Activities

Hole transport material (HTM) synthesis, from potentially biosourced molecules into small organic molecules for organic electronics applications. As the Spiro-OMeTAD, most used HTM requires doping to fully function in perovskite solar cells (PSCs), this doping presents a threat to the stability of the solar cell, considering the sensitivity of the used materials for doping towards humidity, which affects the performance of the PSCs by accelerating the degradation of the perovskite layer.
Through simple green chemistry synthesis (Suzuki coupling in BuOH using mW ) there’s a promising couple of molecules based on dibenzofuran and dibenzothiophene cores that present desirable characteristics, such as their compatible energy levels, simple synthesis and purification process compared to Spiro-OMeTAD’s complex and expensive fabrication, their promising possibility to function in PSCs without requiring any doping, thus a higher PSC stability and cheaper overall fabrication for the HTM layer.
The ideal goal is to achieve comparable, if not superior PCE results to those of Spiro-OMeTAD using DBF and DBT based HTMs that were synthesized using an optimized simpler, greener and more conventional chemistry, while using no doping and having longer PSC lifetime as a result of that.
