Main Research Activities

Actual parallel-plate architecture of lithium-ion batteries consists in lithium ion diffusion in only one dimension between the electrodes. To achieve higher performances in terms of specific capacity and power, configurations enabling lithium ion diffusion in two or three dimensions were proposed in the past. In order to build these complex 3D battery architectures with almost no material waste and avoiding the electrodes interpenetration issues, I’m focusing my work on the Fused Deposition Modeling process, also called 3D-printing.

My PhD thesis project consists in the development of a fully 3D-printed Li-ion battery. In order to do so, it will be required to synthetize and characterize thermoplastic composite filaments charged with active materials currently used in Li-ion batteries. Filament optimization should be done to improve both electrochemical and mechanical performances. In parallel, due to the brittleness of the composite filaments, an adapted/modified 3D-printer will be built.
