Main Research Activities
Current research on Na-ion batteries presents a deficit concerning the materials for negative electrodes. Nowadays, hard carbons have gathered all the attention, however they present high irreversible capacities, high fabrication costs and relatively low specific capacity (<300 mAh/g). Silicon has been studied as anode material for Li-ion battery, with promising results. Recent studies have demonstrated that the reaction between Silicon and Sodium can be accessible. The aim of this research is to take advantage of different synthesis methods, which will provide different structures and morphologies in order to favour the electrochemical reaction between sodium and silicon. Studied phases may include Si1-xGex, CaSi2, CaGe2, NaSi, KaSi and Zintl.Academic Training
